MessageI worked for the GPO/BT from 1950 to 1988. The early days were great with lots of characters everywhere in the job. I took early retirement when Areas became Districts and none of the top bosses had a clue about the day to day work being done.
Now I do telecoms for the Dean Forest Railway. It's a bit like BT, the top guys live in another world but the Wednesday gang I joined are great.
I enjoyed wandering through your website reading your anecdotes.
Cheers

MessageGreat site , congratulations. What Memories eh!! Good times then we were young and reckless . Post office telephones and Deep Purple on 1 site !!.I would like to share a couple of things with you .I joined as an apprentice in 1972 ,t2a 3 years later. Then you could have free driving lessons starting with a post office instructor on a monday and pass your test on Friday !! had green then yellow moggy then progressed to a bedford "HA" which you could backfire also ,3 of us cal guys in convoy having gunfights through the local town also the door key fitted every other engineers "HA"... much to the suprise to my mate when he returned after his christmas/ newyears leave finding we had filled his cab with snow which turned to ice up to the roof . sorry Biffo . Same memories of the Bowl GI !! still got one on my vivaro .
Deep purple .. On a couple occasions we ( guys who worshipped Deep purple Led Zep, ELP and black sabbath )went back to a friend of a friends farm building which had facilities like a full size snooker table !!for a party after the local club closed , all of us pretty well out of it...Roger Glover was there ,he was an ex local who still had his cousin living in the village ... we had to act fairly normal as being stage struck would not have been cool!!. I was reminded that Richie Blackmore turned up once ... cannot remember that ..must have been out of it .Book marked your site so I can look back in depth .Thanks ,Good luck.Adrian Gillard

MessageI've just stumbled onto this site and was amazed to see some nostalgic photos, reminding me of the most enjoyable time of my working life as a PO telephone engineer TTA/T2A from 1974-1980, in Runcorn, Cheshire.. Love the site, well done! Tony

PS (still miss climbing telegraph poles!)

MessageI also grew up on Deep Purple music, particularly the Mark II line-up. Machine Head is my all-time favorite album, and Highway Star is my anthem.

Ian Gillan and his band were here in Manila in August 1982. Unfortunately, a previous commitment with our school organization prevented me from watching him, but two of my friends saw the concert.

Ian Gillan is my all-time favorite singer. Aside from Purple, I also listen to his performance as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar (the brown album).

You have great pictures here of Deep Purple.

Thanks.

MessageI am so jealous. To be able to see Deep Purple live during their peak years, or even the 80's, or even the 90's.... It's too bad they couldn't find a way to get along. How is their perfomance these days? I understand that Ian Gillan doesn't sing Child in Time anymore, but does he still have the "voice"?

MessageI worked for the GPO from 1968 through to BT in 1984, so can relate to all the scenarios and people having experienced similar in Kent. This was one of those books which you do not want to end and try to savour the next instalment for tomorrow, but never do. I read the whole book in one go!

MessageI am trying to find anybody who may remember the McCreedy family, especially John McCreedy, who were based in the areas of Killyleagh & Shrigley. I am really struggling for any information however small and would be extremely grateful for all contributions. My phone number is 07971 153665 and my email address is [email protected].

I remember John Hanna from when I was just a small boy, as he visited our home in Birmingham. I am distantly related to him and John was a witness at the wedding of my mother and father (Tony McCreedy) This is a truly lovely site and I found it to be extremely interesting.

Take care, Martin McCreedy
