MessageChuck,

Just discovered your web site today from a google search on network enumeration problems. As a longtime computer professional and frequent network hacker (not by choice!), let me say thanks for providing a wonderful source of networking information in a clear, concise, and easy to follow manner. Your descriptions of complex issues and networking scenarios are some of the best I've seen.

MessageIve just had a look at your site and found a lot of helpful infomation great work.
A quetion if you have time.
I have 2 XP pro machines networked through a router the internet connection is through a wireless modem connected to the router.
Both computers can ping each other.
Both computers can access the internet.
Guest account is active on both computers.
Both computers show up in network places.
However when I try to browse a shared folder over the network I get a password box asking for a password for the guest account on the other computer.
A blank password does not work nor do any other user passwords.
smilie Do you have any sugestions as to how this can be fixed?
PS
I have tryed to connect the network with a crossover cable and got the same behaviour so I guess the router is not to blame.
Regards
Garry

Hi, Garry,

If you can post your questions online, many folks can probably help you. The format and the facilities offered on this Guestbook really don't give us the communications ability needed here.

What a fantastic resource for troubleshooting. Many thanks.
Pete
(My problem simply ended up being a space included in a workgroup name but I learnt loads troubleshooting!)

MessageBeing a Unix software developer myself, I always assumed there was no such thing as a windows expert.
I am taking that back.
After fighting w/ my home microsoft network for quite some time, with little success, I came accross this web site.
I learned about windows networking in the last 2 hours more than I would ever imagined I could, ever.
And in the process, fixed all my networking problems too.
A big thank to you Chuck!
I will sleep better now knowing that guys like you are still out there... helping for real.
THANKS!

MessageI just discovered your site yesteday, and I can't begin to tell you how helpful it has been. I have spent countless hours trying to figure out why some computers 'can't always see other machines on the network'. I have had this problem on my home network, and small office network.
I have had instances where I could see and copy files to another computer on the workgroup, and 5 minutes later got some variation of the dreaded '...is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource' message when trying to access the same machine. It has been maddening.

My particular problem seems to have been the node type set to peer-to-peer on the problem computer. I deleted the registry keys and voila! I can see the other machines and they can see the problem one.

The explanation of how the browser works is incredibly informative.I have learned more in 2 hours on your site than I have in DAYS anywhere else. You have truly saved my sanity. Can I send you some $$$?

Thank you very much,
Len Calandrella
