MessageI was born and brought up in the Belle vale prefabs, Endbrook Road and remember what a close community it was. My parents were heartbroken when they had to leave their prefab to move to Aigburth. I went to Joseph Williams school and then on to Gateacre Comprehensive, leaving at the age of 15. I note the house at the top of Rose Brow and remember walking past it many times on the way to my grandmothers in Rose Lane, Mossley Hill. I am told it belonged to a Mr Wilson who owned 'The Famous Army Stores' and also 'Starways' the airline which operated out of Speke Airport (although how true this is I cannot confirm) and for which I worked as an apprentice prior to joining the Royal Air force.
A recent trip to Liverpool (I live in Poole, Dorset) surprised me when I found that both Joseph Williams and Gateacre Comprehensive schools had been demolished.
The destruction of the prefab estates at Belle Vale and, no doubt elsewhere caused the collapse of viable, caring and friendly communities and marked the end of an era when children could play in the street and be watched over and cared for by responsible neighbours, my, how things have changed! This, of course was a time when the council was to start buiding 'concrete jungles' - I remember 'Alcatraz' at Netherly, these flats were, I am informed demolished before they were paid for so appallingly bad was their design.
I would be glad to hear from anyone from the Belle Vale area and their experiences of living in a prefab.
