Message | Collision 1961 At Sea USS Randolph CVS 15 Task Group Alpha. Oct.16,1961 I was there. Night time, visibility was about 3 miles. The Randolph was refueling Destroyer DD780.USS Stormes.I just finished the 2000-2400 Damage Control Watch, and was in the Hanger Bay,enroute to berthing quarters, when the Carrier's PA system blasted out the message "This Is Not A Drill-Stand By For Collision To Port." GQ.sounded and the ship rolled violenty port to starboard. I ran forward to portside, knowing there was a 2 &1/2" fire hose rack by the forward elevator pit. I laid out the hose straight, then ran down to the Damage Conrol locker right below, picked up a Y Gate, and two more same size hoses,a 6'applicator. along with the OBA Oxygen & Canister Unit-a Light proceeded to the Hanger Bay assembling the hoses and charging both hoses on the 0/1 level. No help avaliable at this point, I continued forward down the passage way,-a class B black smoke fire, and rhe first compartment I came to was the locksmith shop, hatch cool to the touch, I opened it - No Fire, closed hatch, moved on-the next one was the paint locker, felt that hatch - cool to the touch, upon opening, noticed the paint on the forward bulkhead was burning,-extinguished the fire, then continued forward to the Catwalk hatch-warm to the touch - opened - put the fie out on the Catwalk, with hose nozzle on low fog velocity-was extinguished, and I noticed 2 shipmates doused with JP5 fuel. Still no help-dizzy-shut hose off then sick bay. |
