MessageGoodness me, I'm only 45 and have been turning clay into loam for 30 years. Every image and turn of phrase in "This Organic Life" mirrors my thoughts and feelings. I was in CO on vacation and thumbed through your book. 30 minutes later my wife is saying "got to go" and I commented "this is a great book!" Lo and behold, Christmas came and so did your book. Thanks or taking the time to write out what might take me a few more decades to commit to print. Such is the nature of connecting to plants, it's universal.

I'm a high school English teacher and always thought the writing of my students would be better if we were allowed to simply take a walk and observe the gentle pace of nature. Slow down the racing thoughts and brwose the aisles of forest, or scrub or grass.

I'm sure your book on nutrition and school achievement will be just as rewarding for me. Students who dare to eat non-food around me get the lecture, and those choosing wisely get praised. Now I can add "what Joan would say" to my spiel. smilie

MessageHi Joan, I just finished Growing, Older. I am 60 and in the last 5 years have started an organic farm, supplying eggs and market crops to our local community. I'm so glad I read your book, as it gives inspiration for my future. I ache, wake up sore, am pulling muscles I never knew I had, but the life on our 45 acres of NW Montana with our 185 chickens, 25 sheep is special. Most importantly I never have to go to the gym. Hopefully this will keep me as young as you as I Grow, Older. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, passions and point of view! I, like you, am proud to grow most of what my wife Susan and I eat every day. How much more local can we all get is a thought that I have almost every day. Thanks for so well articulating that POV.

Messagehello joan,

I am a former student of your from back in the mid 1980's. your impact on my life has been large. I have recently enjoyed reconnecting with you by reading Growing, Older. I can hear your voice telling these stories, and I can imagine your garden. I had finished the read, and several days later then I received a TC newsletter and I knew that there might be something about you in this edition, and there was a story about the documentary about your work in which I get to lay eyes on that garden, which is even more glorious to behold with my eyes than it had been with my imaginings.

thanks for all that you have given me/us.

with warm regards,

rochelle sirota

MessageJoan , what a pleasure talking to you, thank you for giving me the opportunity to see this web site. The devastation of hurricanes is something we have to deal here every once in a while. It's like a mandala , after working laboriously for weeks , it's erased with a sweep of a broom; and start again. kisses and hugs. julio

MessageHello Joan,
I had met you at the Garden Club of America's Annual Meeting several years ago in New Jersey. You were one of our keynote speakers.
I am Anne Hall's daughter (wife of the sadly late, but wonderful Dr. Ross Hume Hall).
I am on the Horticulture Committee for The Garden Club of Virginia. We host an educational joint Conservation and Horticulture Workshop in September and was interested to know how much you charge for speaking engagements. Our workshop is a 1day affair in Richmond, Virginia.

Thank you, Meg French (757) 705-1065/[email protected]

Messagehello Joan.
literally just found out about you, through Alys Fowler.
Saw the video of your garden restoration after the flood. Amazing.
you are an inspiration to a relatively new gardener.(although I've been gardening since I was a child, I acquired my own garden 3 years ago.)
Now to find your books.
keep up the good work.
