MessageI just saw a bit about the Oceanos and googled and found this site.

I hope the captain of that boat never gets work in the maritime industry again. Even scrubbing decks is too good for him, as its on a boat, which he should not come near for the rest of his short, miserable, bastard life.

Cheers to the entertainers/rescuers!

MessageGreat Blog Rose!! I just watched a program tonight called Shockwave on the history channel about the sinking of the Oceanos. Im so happy to know everyone survived that despite the cowardly captian. I cant believe the captain took a boat for himself and a boat for his luggage and left all the passengers stranded on a sinking ship. The guy should have been hung imho.. Anyways great site Rose

Thanks!
Zimmy

MessageI am not a survivor of the sinking, but I clearly remember being on this ship in 1955 when it was called "Jean Laborde".
My parents, my brother and I (I was 6 years old)boarded the "Jean Laborde" in Marseilles in 1955 for a cruise to "Tananarive" in Madagascar. I have some very vivid memories of the ship (barely 2 years old then) and the cruise. I also remember going through the Suez Canal.
It is a sad ending for this ship after so many years, fortunately everyone survived.

MessageThey didn't have Ourland as a choice, I was sitting in the hairdressers today and it really sounded that like they were saying Ourland and not Ireland.

Anyway just wanted to tell all my friends out there in the rest of the world and especially South Africa that I miss you all terribly, so please leave me a message!

MessageFlipping through the channels, I happened upon one of my usual watch', 'The World's Most Amazing Videos'.

I had missed most of it, but it was a top 10 of amazing videos and the video the entertainer had captured of the sinking of Oceanos was shown.

My curiosity piqued as to what happened to the Capt. of the ship (I was expecting a court lynching), but could not find news of it anywhere through a Google search. On the other hand, through this, I stumbled onto your blog.

I applaud your courage and am thankful that you and everyone else made it through this ordeal safely.

May you have many more anniversaries (albeit with better circumstances than this) to come.

I look forward to see what other interesting things you put up.

MessageHi, tonight I came across a documentary on National Geographic and saw the Okeanos sink ! Back in 1988 I worked for a travel agency in Athens and often brought passengers to the harbour, also to the Okeanos...
And now, after almost 20 years I saw it sink on TV, I had no idea !
So I googled 'Okeanos Epirotiki South Africa' and came across your blog. I am so glad everybody survived, but what an adventure ! Good luck to all the survivors !

MessageHi,

Myself and my wife Tracy were entertainers working on board when the Oceanos sank. Along with Julian the magician and Lorraine the cruise director, we ended up running the rescue operation because the Captain and officers had abandoned their posts.

It didn't put us off working on cruise ships, which we continued to do for many years. We were also working on the Achille Lauro when she sank in 1994, and we still went back to sea for around 6 more years after that.

We are now settled in England and I run a musical equipment website called Stagebeat.com

Your blog is interesting and enjoyable to read. Well done.

Moss
