MessageThanks for the helpful guidance. I'm on my way to solving my problem of not accessing files on my XP Home Edition machine since installing SP2 on both machines (the other computer has "pro"smilie. I have run ipconfig and browstat on the home edition machine and saved output of both utilities , which happens to be the internet connection and my main computer.

I did have one question, though. When you use the expression "browser service", is this in a different context than internet browsers such as IE or Netscape/Mozilla? I've never heard that terminology before. My internet-connected machine is the Home Edition one, so I am wondering if it is possible to access files on this machine from another machine since installation of SP2. I have no problem browsing the internet through the home network, just can't see files one way (main machine shows up on XP-Pro machine home networking list, just get the pesky "access denied" when trying to reach files). This has been going on for months, I have read many blogs and tried much, but have some hope from the depth and educational nature of your posts.

One other odd thing I have noticed, even though I am the administrator on my home edition machine, all firewall settings are grayed out. Has a program taken over my computer somehow?

Thanks again,
Brent Washam

MessageThanks for the tips, as you guessed I'm sort of new to this but have been blogging away since August 2006.
Used to write a diary way back on my Amstrad, kept that up for two years - then got a job on a UK weekly paper. So was writing enough at the day job. smilie javascript:SetSmiley(' smilie 'smilie

MessageI'm a self-taught computer user. I installed a wireless network via a DSL box and Linksys router. Apart from a few randon problems (because my 16yr old is constantly installing stuff) there are few problems - except the one laptop running XP-Pro that I can never get to file/printer share. It has connectivity with Internet via PCM-CIA card, but never sees the other machines (therefore not their printers).

Thanks for your site. I appreciate your clarity and practical help!
