MessageMy family is directly related to Terence McSweeney, and although the family connection has been suppressed for the past 85 years, it's very enlightening to read such a positive and informative account of his contributions during this period.
You've set my curiosity alight!

MessageAs I should have mentioned in my previous message to this message board that this Website is very good and interesting with lots of facts about many things that went on in Ireland during the struggle for independence. I have learned quite a bit from this Website. I became interested in Ireland when researching my O’Shea ancestors who were from Cork. Some of the people here who have written to this message board seem to have an ancestor in the IRA. I do not think I have any ancestors in the IRA, but my ancestors were all Catholics and they were also a large family.

I just wanted to mention to Kerry Sullivan that there is another documentary style history DVD called “Discover Ireland.” It does cover the 1916 Easter Uprising period in Dublin & Cork including Michael Collins and the Civil War and also the conflicts in Northern Ireland including Bloody Sunday. It is mainly a story of the Emerald Isle with the culture and the conflicts. I recommend this DVD for anyone who wants to learn about Ireland.

MessageHello, I just wanted to reply to Kerry Sullivan about a DVD of the 1916 Easter Uprising period. I have a film on DVD called Michael Collins staring Liam Neeson. It is an interesting film based around irish history of that time. I bought this with interest as I have an interest in irish history as I am researching some of my ancestors which are from Cork and relatives who are currently living in Cork.

MessageWhat an outstanding historical site! I am distantly related to Michael Collins and most proud of my family's roots in Cork. There are significant and fascinating matters of debate outlined here which are almost invisible in the UK.
Has there been a dvd or video released on the period?
Thanks to all involved.A great effort!

MessageI would like to invite you all to look at our living history group, in which we interpret the 3rd West Cork Flying Column, trying to bring a visual reminder of the past to the history-starved of the Eastern United States.

MessageMy grandfather, Herbrt "Sean" Mitchell, fought with Tom Barry, who was guest of honour at my grandparents Golden Wedding celebration. I also had the priviledge to know the General.
Herbert Mitchell was a Protestant Republican from Offaly. His brother, Walter, was interned in Tintown.
Does anybody have any further info on either Mitchell.

MessageWhat a wonderful contribution to our history. Thanks to those who put the effort into this well designed, easy to navigate, and very informative site. My own ancestors were all from southern County Monaghan, among them my grandfather & great grandfather were Fenians. Jim Larkin was a Fenian treasurer, city councilman in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and a Major in the RI militia. His son, my grandfather, Tom Martin Larkin, was sent from Pawtucket to New York City from 1916 to 1920. I have always wondered what he was able to accomplish there (aside from meeting my grandmother!). One of those rescued from Fremantle Australia on whaling ship "Catalpa" James “Wilson” McNally was also from up north (near the Down Armagh border, I think). He is buried in the Old St Mary’s Church cemetery near my great grandfather, Jim Larkin in Pawtucket. God bless them and the brave men from Cork who tried to gain freedom.

MessageI believe that my grandfather Michael Crowley fled Bantry for the U.S. after June 1920 when his invalid brother was killed at home in an apparent retaliatory shooting by RIC members in Bantry on June 21, 1920.

I would be interested in anyone who can provide more information on these incidents.

MessageSean Moylan came from Co. Limerick originally, but as far as I know lived in Co. Cork most of his life.

Do you know what part of Cork your grandfather came from?
