MessageIn reply to Conroy. There was a C.Conroy who was an I.R.A. Intelligence Agent who worked inside Victoria Barracks Cork during 1920.He was arrested and interned in Spike Island following the raid on Mick Bowles house in Clogheen early 1921.Also an Eily Conroy was a member of Cumann na mBan in the Aherla Area of Mid-Cork throughout this period.

Messagejust wondering who is responsible for this site?
It is excellent. I am looking for images relating to key events during this period as I am producing an exhibition of paintings based on them.
Thanks for the effort and once again great work on the site

MessageYes, in actual fact the figure mentioned in the recent book by John Borgonovo 'Florence and Josephine O'Donoghue's War of Independence' is more than 12 ....

'In the beginning of March, as the reprisal for the execution of Cork No. 1 Brigade prisoners in Victoria Barracks, city forces shot over twelve unarmed British soldiers, killing six, in a series of coordinated attacks in the city centre'. (p. 143)

More information on the above incident will be added later.

MessageAccording to another site , the IRA shot a total of 12 British soldiers in Cork city on Feb 28th 1921, whereas you refer to a total of 10.

have look here:

webpages.dcu.ie/~foxs/irhist/february_1921.htm

not sure who is the more accurate. do you have any more details on this event - shooting 10 or 12 soldiers in the middle of the garrisoned and policed Cork city without any IRA being captured or killed is one heck of an almighty organisational effort.

thanks.

great site by the way!

MessageCongratulations on an excellent website and a badly needed online resource.A lot of hard work has obviously gone into this. I hope this sets an example for other counties or for a site covering the entire island during the 1916-23 period.

MessageHi, excellent tribute to Ireland's sons. Just to correct one detail - Donnachada MacNiallghuis was not attached to the Cork Brigade. He'd joined the Cork Volunteers shortly after their inception and, at the time of his arrest, was Captain of the Cyclist Company attached to Brigade "HQ."
He was subsequently the O/C 1st Northern Division (Anti-Treaty) during the Civil War.

MessageYou really need to get this stuff onto Wikipedia, for future posterity. There's hardly anything about this history on there - just the bare details,, but not much in depth. You've done a great job.
