MessageThank you for the work that's been put into this website and the varied opinions and histories herein. smilie

Having read a few books about Tom Barry I was surprised to learn here he was born a Kerryman.

With Barry in mind, may I ask your readership a question? Meda Ryan's recent book on his life features a photograph of a group of internees. One of them is a J Ahearne of Castlemartyr.

Does anyone interested in east Cork history post here? Mr Ahearne and I share common ancestors (I dare say) with a Colonel Fred Ahern (1900 - 1958) of the National Army's showjumping team.

From what I can gather Fred Ahern served in the Volunteers in Longford, although his family came from the eastern side of Lough Sheelin. I've been able to trace the line back to Castlemartyr/Ballymacoda around 1800.

I hope that if anyone picks up on this little scrap of history and might know something they'll drop a note. smilie Thank you.

Messagebillm,

This book has just been published -
'Blood On The Banner - The Republican Struggle in Clare'.
It is for sale online from the publisher Mercier Books at - www.mercierpress.ie

'Fifty three republicans from Clare gave their lives in the struggle for independence, but the story of Clare republicanism goes much deeper than that. Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc takes the story of Clare’s republicans from the start of the twentieth century to the end of the War of Independence. In the process he examines the course of the campaign, the events tragic, heroic and the victims, British and Irish.

Featuring detailed descriptions of the battles and campaigns, Blood On The Banner offers a fresh perspective on events that shaped the county for decades to come'.

MessageIf you search for 'Ballingeary volunteers 1996' in Google, the name Denis Cronin is mentioned twice within the first result.
Could not find any reference to the name in any of the usual literature e.g. 'Rebel Cork's Fighting Story' etc.

MessageLooking for any information on Denis Cronin, born 1899 in Ballyvourney, Macroom, County Cork. I know his IRA medal was awarded for service during the years 1919-1921, but his obituary states he served for five years. Emigrated with brother Jeremiah to Wilmington Delaware in 1923. Also had brothers Pete and Michael, sisters Kate & Mary. (There were more.)

Their parents were John Cronin and Catherine Healy.
