MessageGreat site. I too worked in Sheffield as a BT engineer, starting as a TTA in 1969 and bailing out as a Commo in 1995 having had enough.
Most of my career at BT was as a linesman, later moving into the test desk as a senior tech, and then setting up the 154 business fault reporting centres in the north of england.

I remember Frankie Bough, Reg Dingley and co. and a lot of the stories of what they got up to, and this has just brought back some great memories.

Great site!

MessageBrillant, a true representation of life as an early PO / BT field engineer.
Been there, seen that, done that, then took early retirement.

MessageAlright Dennis,

Nice site. Like the stories. My Dad was a carpenter for Liverpool Docks & Harbour Company in the 70s&80s. So I can imagine some of the tales will be similar in the course of his recollections. Funny & all lads together ! : >

Now of course - Technology has taken out the middle man for better or for worse... at least you can be warmer on the job. I guess though you must miss those days. When I left school. I was told all BT jobs were being phased out due to recession and of course the North West's take on things. I did fancy a go as an operator but there you go.

I was looking at your site an angle of ephemera. I used to think phones were interesting & watched it all go from electro machanical to analogue to digital. If that's right? I wasn't sharp on me science though - so probably would end up on a desk. I'm in graphics/visual id but liked all the post modern symbols of early BT years. Followed it through to the advent of Wolf Ollins on the 'Piper' Insignia.

Can you guess how old I am by that ?

Cheers mate! All the best for 2006

Craig smilie

MessageDennis,

Great site!

I have some maps you might find interesting...regarding your uncle John Lundy when he lived in the 'old' shrigley. Also complete list of all others who lived in the old village up until 1966-68 Just need a confirmation of your e-mail address.
