MessageI just read a article about your book "This Organic Life" and am looking forward to reading the book. I lived on a little quarter acre lot and have moved to a bigger place that will afford me the space to grow a much bigger garden. As I get closer to retirement I am looking at becoming more self suffcient.

MessageJoan, I just finished "This Organic Life - Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader". I thoroughly enjoyed the real life story of success and failure in the struggle with the elements of nature. It amazed me how you faced total destruction and still managed to be able to continue. Thank you for sharing so much disappointment and heartache and for displaying the over coming spirit in all the disappointing things that happened. Your ending chapter about the disappearing land in California and the demanding culture for food that we have become, opened my eyes about how we have become a consumer of food at any cost. It's become more about profit and not about sustainability. It's a little scary to think that we actually can't grow all of our own food any more. I am making an attempt to grow as much as I can.

MessageI found your book on the libary shelf. I'm going to order it so I can have it permanently on my bookshelf at home. Absolutely wonderful. I try to grow veggies/herbs in my increasingly shady backyard and find I can do it if I move containers around a bit...squash grows beautifully straight out of the compost pile...love the writings and look forward to more!

Best,
Lucinda

MessageHi Joan,

I read about you in Barbara Kingsolver's "Small Wonders" and immediately got your book from the library. It's inspiring and right on! We live on Orcas Island, north of Seattle, on the border of Canada. Many of us are growing our own food, supporting local farmers, and understanding the difference between food miles and food inches, feet, and yards. As we can, dry, freeze, and grow a greater percentage of our food, it is books like yours that serve as inspiration. Thanks and best to you!

From Orcas Island,

Didier Gincig

MessageHi Joan, I want to sell your book to China. Is the Chinese rights of "This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader" available? Should I contact the publisher or you? Please let me know, thank you!

MessageI just finished reading Growing, Older. I enjoyed it a lot, as I enjoyed your previous book. I am beginning to think more about aging as I just turned 65 last week. I am a gardener without, I'm thankful to be able to say, the flooding problems which plague you. I'm near the top of a hill (small mountain in NY terms) and my biggest problems are Portland's cool, dry summers that are always too short for best tomato and pepper ripening and occasional high winds. May you achieve your goal and go out with tomato-stained fingers and garden soil under your nails.

MessageHi Joan,
Thank you for your book which I read this summer! I am looking to go back to school for landscape design but am far more interested in creating edible gardens than lawns. Do you know of any programs that specialize in sustainable (rather than just pretty to look at) landscapes? Thank you for any advice!
Warmly,
Laura
