MessageJoined the Navy Feb 7,1961, boot camp San Diego. No A school for me, assigned to the deck force standing wheel & lookout watches. Aboard USS Stark County LST-1134. I was asked to volunteered for an opening in the radio shack. I accepted and immediately started learning code. I practiced for hours copying fleet broadcasts. Finally acheiving 20-30 wpm. I made 3rd class first attempt and was transferred to USS Tombigbee AOG-11. I made 2nd class on schedule, and remained on board until being discharged in Feb 65.
I still find myself taping code against the arm of chairs and table tops.

Made 2 med cruises and a 4 month good will cruise to South America, geat ship and shipmates. RMC Rock was a great chief. Stayed on the Leahy until they decommissioned her in Phila 1967. Was then assigned to USS Charles F. Adams (DDG2) for shakedown cruise in Gitmo Bay, that did it for me got discharged (RM2) in 1967, really should of made the Navy a career.
