MessageTo Joseph Rosser (and the others).
Derroll was mostly playing a folk basic strum, which he learned from Pete Seeger. The right hand is going "up, down, up, down".
An other basic folk-method (good for playing a steady rhytm for square dances)is frailing. In frailing all the notes are plucked by the back of the fingernail as the hand moves always downwards.
-(1) With the back of the fingernail of the index or middle finger pick down on a string (move the whole forearm down). -(2) Left hand hammering or pulling a string. -(3) Right hand picks down across all strings (or just one or two) and the thumb comes to rest on the 5th string. -(4) When the right hand moves up, the thumb pulls the 5th string. Its sounds differently.
The most hardest to learn frailing is to place your thumb on the 5th string on the way down and then pluck the 5th string on the way up.

Keep on pickin'
Cheers,
Teddy...

MessageDerrol, when I was 19 and sitting in my college dorm playing Scruggs Style, the old janitor heard me. He knocked on the door and came inside. He said he played and wanted to show me a style he called "frailing". The style was to up pick with the index, brush down with the middle and ring fingers and then pluck the 5th with his thumb. From time to time I practiced the style, but didn't get pretty proficient until I was in my late 40's. But, I remembered the style and came to replace Scruggs with it. However, until I ran across your site, I've never met anyone else who used it. Does the style have a name. My clawhammer buddies just call it frailing and say it's not a part of clawhammer history. Actually, I prefer this over clawhammer as I feel I have more control, speed and volume. I would enjoy any comments you wish to share. Thanks for the site. I'm going to work on some of the songs you have listed.

MessageDag Walter,
