MessageI enjoyed reading about your travels and It seems that you are a sensitive and empathetic credit to our species.
I would like to share the thought that human beings don't need religion to treat each other with savagery or indifference. I think stalin and polpot among others brought the tally of death and torture from the non-religious up to date with the religious. Christianity has dominated western culture (ours) so long that it is only natural to blame this particular religion for society's ills. Ironically it is Christianity, among ancient religions, that gets much of the spotlight for intolerance to homosexuality in some groups but tolerance and compassion in others. After all the spirit of this religion is tolerance and compassion. I think it is people, not this religion that is the enduring problem. People are like chickens: the gang up on the outsider or the minority and peck it to death. As we cast off the superstitions of our ancestors in a quest to be enlightened we may just be opening the flood gates to a cruelty we could scarcely imagine: after all I think most of the earliest hospitals and universities begin with "st" something. As for the fantastic claims of a religion they seem to be a way to describe a "creator" who must necessarily be outside of "creation" to have made it. How could any entity with that capability be encompassed by human language? Wouldn't you speak through an ant to reach the other ants?

MessageHello Stephen,

Thanks for your message. Glad to you liked the photos of Petra. Not sure how long you are going to be there.
I would think it is best to organise a trip up to Jabal Haroun with one of the bedouin chaps you will come across when walking around Petra.
I cannot remember how much it cost, but it was not too much. It took about six hours to bget there and back. There are monuments all over Petra, but centered near the Siq/entrance, so you can do both.
There are a number of walks you can do, each one taking the best part of the day.
Have fun.

Cheers, Charles

MessageYour pictures of Petra are great.

I and a friend are going to Petra next month.

Is it possible for me to arrange before leaving on my trip to have a guide ( perhaps yours ) take us to the top of Jabal Haroun ( Mt. Hor ) or must I wait until I arrive there.

Also can you tell me how much time we should allocate for the donkey ride up and back, and what the approximate cost will be.

I'd also be interested in knowing if we will we get a chance to view some of the Petra archealogical sites during our ride.

Any other info would be appreciated.

Regards,
Steve

MessageDear Charles and Fred,
Once again I accidentaly came across this sight and was totaly impressed with your artical about religion. Im a Christian that is true, but i don't even like what religion has done to christianity so i call myself a child of God instead. I'm a single mom never married bla bla bla, well imagin how religion looks down its nose at me.I honestly belive we were create for our own unique reasons, and those of us that suffer in the name of Jesus to let he truth come out are truly blessed . Each person born to this world is a creation of god and is accepted by God as long as the individual understands what Jesus did for them and belives, they are good to go. Therefore we all have equal oppertunity to be saved by grace. People of religion who are racist bigots, haters, ect will one day have to stand before God and be accountable for the ignorance they have puked out onto the world. More or less my point is even if someone is homosexual, alcoholic,PROSTITUTE Jesus saves you just have to belive, find your own way to God, an forget the crap that the world tries to shove down our throat. You want the truth find it yourself ,and thats when all will find there salvation.

Sincerly,
Pearl

MessageLast night I played bridge with some friends and told them about your return trip to Jo'burg. One of the ladies often goes to S.Africa and told me that the authorities over there say you must have two empty pages on your passport. Apparently, they stamp your passport all the time.

KLM should have told you!!

Love Mum smilie

MessageI just discovered your blog today, whilst perusing the Internet. All I can say is "Wow!" Great pictures and narratives. I almost feel as if I'm accompanying the two of you on your journeys. I enjoy travelling, and it is one of my great passions.

Although it truly isn't important one way or the other, are the two of you a gay couple? Please forgive me if you found the question offensive, because it wasn't asked with that intention. As I see it, being gay has about as much significance as being right-handed or left-handed. It's too bad the rest of the world doesn't understand that.

I've not had the time to read your blog completely as of yet, but I intend on returning to it to read it in it's entirety in the near future. That aside, I was interested in your experiences in Turkey. I also enjoyed your description of Christmas Dinner, and could easily visualise the plate of food. Your narrative made me hungry. LOL

I'm a gay man, and have been partnered for the last 21 years with the most wonderfully understanding and sensitive man I've ever known. We have had an incredible life together. Perhaps one day, I'll be able to allocate more time in my life and take up blogging.

In short, thank you for your blog and allowing me to share in some of your experiences.

Best wishes to you both.

Kind regards,

Holt Holten
