I have rewritten this note over and over and it is not going to get written if I wait until I am completely happy with it. I am writing my feelings as best I can. My intent is to let you know what dear friends you and Richard have been, and though Richard is gone, this does not change that fact.

It was easy to fall into a friendship with you both. I have always enjoyed and felt so lucky to have you as longtime friends. Richard called me Ter I. It seemed he had nicknames for many of his friends. I am going to miss hearing him say that. The last time I saw him, he was driving down the road in his old truck. We waved and smiled. I would give so much if I could talk to him now. Good friends don’t have to be told, but I would have liked to tell him in words anyway that he was a very dear and good friend. I also would like to tell him again how much I appreciated him staying up all night to roast that pig for my 40th birthday. That was a huge gift!!!

I admired Richard for being the person he was. He was fun, confident and a smart man. He was down to earth and comfortable with how he conducted his life. He took things in stride and helped many people in his life. I think he lived his life honorably. He was a happy man and made those around him happy. He seemed to have a peace of mind that eludes many of us. I hope I can find that peace of mind someday. I think he lived his truth and a beautiful life.

MessageSharon,

This is a very loving tribute. Living in Indiana, my family didn't travel much and our trips to my father's home state were limited. I didn't know Richard very well, but I have learned a lot about his character and personality by reading these letters. I appreciate his honesty, skills as a builder, generosity, commitment to his family and parents, and his sense of humor that shown through these tributes. Sharon, you have so many wonderful memories of Richard, and I thank you for sharing them with us. I just wish he were still here so that you could have more happy memories. My thoughts are with you and John as you try to cope with this great loss.

Your cousin, Teresa
