MessageI was aboard with VS39 as an AT2 for the war college demonstration cruise in 1959. We visited New York and Quebec. I graduated AT A school in Memphis in 1956. I spent two years at NAS Oceana, before my assignment with VS39 ar Quonset Point, RI. I went on and got an EE from Pitt, and then worked 42 years at NASA.

MessageMy father served on USS Randolph during the one of the 50s Med cruises. It was great to see his name in the S-6 group even though he was listed missing in the photo. Dad passed away in 2010, so thanks for this memorial to USS Randolph.

MessageServed Aboard 1964 to 1967 as a parachute rigger. It's been a long long time so don't remember those I served with except a guy named Hughes in my division. Really enjoyed the Med cruise and the Cruise to England, Scotland and Norway. I especially enjoyed Spain-what a great and welcoming people.

MessageI was on the Randolph during my time with HS-7 1960-62. Still remember the days of practicing capsule pick-up and then recovering John Glenn and Gus Grissom back in the early Mercury days when NASA was splashing them down in the Atlantic. Experienced the collision with that Liberian freighter and the emergency fuel line breakaway while Randoo was refueling one of the task force ships. Some of the many highlights: Rode out a hurricane off Cape Hatteras, was at Gitmo during one of the tense situations there, New York's Fleet week and too many more memorable events to recall. Those were really great adventures and the best of times, though during those years perhaps few of us realized we'd look back so fondly. If there are folks that served in HS-7 (NAS Norfolk)in those years that remember me I'd like to hear from you.

MessageUSS Randolph
Lt Robert Louis Leo
'58 - 6 July 67 killed/midair

Father, Robert Louis Leo, killed 6 July 67 in midair of two S-2s off the bow
of Randolph while conducting Delta Switch pattern quals. had finished shore
duty and were headed to Vietnam AOR (I was told) Accident happened 38 miles
off Cape Hatteras NC and we lived in Norfolk. I was only 2 years old...If
anybody has any info of my father, his tours, or the day/the crash he died
in, Please contact me.
I've been in the USAF 32 years now, am stationed at the Pentagon, and only
recently visited his and the other 3 pilots markers in Arlington (with my
two sons). I'm a nuclear/munitions officer and found out my father was a
weapons officer first, then flew 'nuclear depth charges"(?) in the S-2.
Neat link to his past in my present.
Robert
