Message | Tom, See a description of the history of that shorthand at the following page: http://bit.ly/wordorigins The article is more harsh than I prefer, but its factual points are actually good. The word you object to has been shorthand for writing "Christmas" for hundreds of years, and the shorthand originated with the look of the original lettering and with Christians. I'll quote from the ending words on that page: ---------- "Even Webster’s dictionary acknowledges that the abbreviation Xmas was in common use by the middle of the sixteenth century. . . . It is simply another way to say Christmas, drawing on a long history of symbolic abbreviations used in the church ... Understanding this use of Christian symbolism might help us ... focus on more important issues of the Faith during Advent, and bring a little more Peace to the Xmas Season." ---------- I hope so. |
