MessageRon, what a great birthday gift!

You have a wonderful experience ahead of you. It'll be fairly cold at night in the Highlands in August, so bring some warm clothing too. But it's the dry time and you'll likely have very good daytime weather for morning in Machu Picchu.

If you wind up at Arequipa also, I just read this: "A good time to visit Arequipa is August, as on the 15th of that month, the city dresses up to celebrate the anniversary of its Spanish foundation in 1540. There are fairs, firework displays and bullfights."

But Machu Picchu is magical. It's something about that space. Try to spend some very early morning time there or find a way to stay after everyone has gone after 2:30pm or so and you'll have it almost to yourselves (well, you and the few others remaining at the top).

Have a superb trip!

- Andrys

MessageMy wife gave me a trip to Machu Picchu for my birthday next month and I've been cruising the net for updated info. It's been a dream to visit there for 30 years. Your site, with all its photographs and description and great music, is terrific.

MessageI am also quite curious about the ties Hatto is supposed to have had with Cortot (his pupil) and Arnold Bax (his favourite performer). I couldn’t find a mention of the latter – only of two LP recordings from 1970 on the Revolution label: 001, of the Variations for Piano and Orchestra with the Guilford Phil. Orch. under the direction of [Vernon] Handley; 010, of the Sonatas 1 and 4 and the Toccata.

Nothing about Cortot. But curiously enough, Cortot conducted a concert in which a J. Hatto played: but this was in 1904, J. Hatto was Jane Hatto, a French mezzo-soprano, and the work was Ravel’s Shéhérazade. Could the “confusion” have arisen from this?

MessageThese are the documented performances of Joyce Hatto I found in online databases. The fact that I didn’t find more than that doesn’t necessarily mean there weren’t, but that I couldn’t find additional digital information.
- The Manchester Free Trade Hall Programs (1951-1974) lists a Joyce Hatto concert on 9/11/1958.
- The Wigmore Hall archives contain a program of a Liszt recital by Joyce Hatto on “Thursday 26 October [no year]”. This concert is listed in one of the Music Yearbooks (published by the National Music Council of Great Britain), hence the date is clear (1972). This volume also lists a concert in which she played the Introduction and Allegro for piano and string orchestra by Michael Maxwell with the Concert Artists String Orch. under the direction of Arthur Dennington (can’t see the date).
- Ates Orga’s Chopin (published 1983) mentions that Joyce Hatto gave first performances of Two Bourrées by Chopin (“incomplete, unpublished and unperformed until quite recently”) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, 1973.
- The British Music Yearbook of 1975 has a mention of a concert on October 25 in which she played Liszt’s Caroussel de Mme Pellet-Narbonne.
- The British Music Yearbook of 1976 lists her recital at Queen Elizabeth Hall on March 27 in which she played Chopin’s Wiosna (a first performance in London).

MessageAC, thanks for letting me know you enjoyed those and that you were there about 9 years ago. It's been 10-1/2 years for me, for Peru. So much of the world to see and not always easy to do but I hope to see more of it. Peru was a revelation. In the highlands, I notice that in others' photos from more current trips, almost nothing has changed. And in Pisac one family can be seen over the years at the market. I hope that when you go again, you'll share some pictures online.

Budi, re Argerich, she's never done master classes here before. We're lucky when she shows up at all since she doesn't like to fly and it's an added trip from the east coast after flying from Europe.

MessageAndry I enjoy going through your photos. It has been nine years since I visited all of the sites you visited. I am now sharing it with my 9 year old daughter and she was very interested and lots of questions from the photos. It is nice sharing my experience of Peru to my daughter. I can't wait to go back and see the wonderful people I met. Thanks for bringing back the good times I had in Peru.
