Message | Twenty-one year veteran of USAF. Spent a brief TDY at KI Sawyer in 1983 to assist in bomber maintenance backlog. Served in other notable organizations such as: 5th FIS, Minot; 32TFS, Soesterberg; and 305th ARW, Grissom. Loved my time and experience in the UP so well I came back to live permanently in Marquette. |

Message | Just came across this site. I was the Personnel Officer for SAGE 1958-60. During that time the runways were closed for preparation for B-52s. Much of the base amenities--housing, etc. were under construction. There was a theater, a few recreation facilities. Not much to do on base, we went to Ishpeming to a bar, or Marquette when it wasn't snowing. Only 6 officers lived on base, in a barracks building that was reserved for us. I will never forget the snow or cold as I sit here in Hawaii. Glad to see the base and times are remembered. |

Message | I had two tours at KI with the 69th Munitions Maintenance Squadron of the 410th Bomb Wing. The first was from November 1969 to May 1971. I came back to KI after a year at U-Tapao AF Thailand and was stationed there until I separated from the USAF as a Captain in June 1973. I have lots of memories of those tours, many of which have grown rosier as the years pass. I'll never forget the 220 inches of snow the first winter I was there. My wife and I are thinking of visiting the base this summer, just for fun. |
