MessageHello!
I came across your blog while learning more about Gumpei Yamamuro. He's my grandpa's uncle and though I heard about him a little bit while growing up, I never really looked into his life much until tonight when I came across his name in my great uncle's book (Ohtani Fujio). Anyhow, it is giving me a lot to think about. My mother (related to Yamamuro only by marriage to my grandpa) went to Doshisha, as did her mother, but I never heard her mention that she went there because of Yamamuro (I have to ask her). Also, she actually grew up in Osaka, which I see is where you are now (I wish I was there now!!)

Neither of her parent's were Christians, but my mother became a Seventh-Day Adventist partly because of the ESL schools that they had there run by missionaries (my dad was a student missionary from Pacific Union College but they weren't dating then). Anyway, I'm mentioning that part because I see that you're a former-SDA as well. What a coincidence! smilie

Anyway, thanks for the interesting blogs, and sorry for the ramblings!

MessageHi Ramone

Since there was a space limitation I had to divide this message into two parts. Here is the rest:

I ran across your blog while trying to get some information on the book SMALL MAN OF NANATAKI. I heard the book read on Family Radio many years ago. Backtracking a bit. I decided to do a web search to see if my memory was right about the title. I was off by one word from instead of "of."

I mentioned this book to a friend when I shared an excerpt from wikipedia about Max Kolbe's decision to build a monastery on the other side of the mountain. He was told the location was not in tune with nature. But it was a good thing he had the monastery built on the "wrong" side. If it had been built on the "right" side of the mountain it would have been destroyed. Tragically "Uncle John" or the small man of Nanataki lost his family. Of course, being Lutheran, I will not say this makes the Roman Catholic church true and the Lutheran church false. Max Kolbe later died in Auschwitz. And I would not say his death proves that the Roman Catholic church was wrong. It was simply the
way things worked out. I remember my elderly friend Grandma says "God is still in control."
That means God is in control even when bad things happen. But I must admit I have a hard time accepting this. I'm a sinner and a limited finite
human being.

MessageHi Ramone

I have to agree with your agonizing over the author Endo. I read his book on Christianity. I think he was off base. He had some interesting points, but I would say overall he was wrong. I don't even think he was really in tune with Roman Catholic or even "Mere Christianity."

Since you are in Japan, have you heard of the Kakure Kirishitan? They were descendants of the original Japanese Roman Catholics. Unfortunately they fell into scyncretism. But when contact was reestablished, the majority accepted correction and were received back into the church. But a small minority refused correction and persist to this day.

MessageHi Ramone

Greetings in the name of Christ! Indeed this is heartening to me to chanced upon your blog today in particular. I have substituted church service with a personal prolonged time with God, seeking specifically about His desire for me in terms of my gifting in arts and direction in ministry. I always have a heart for japan. i believe in the deep psych in the japanese culture that resonates with the heart of Christ. I'm a devoted fan of manga/anime esp shonen style. The ideology behind these stories remind me often of Christ's call for us to never give up our First Love in the face of great difficulties.

Im also encouraged by your deep understanding of the spiritual issue in this particular group of people. Indeed the bible has reminded us that "we no longer think from a worldly point of view". As christians, we have to brave spiritual battles each day to keep ourselves close to Jesus and by communing in the Spirit, then can we win the battle in the physical realm.
God has shown me that He is alive and listening today! smilie I am seeking directions to join a japanese congregation in singapore (with the same busy culture as japan) and feeling satisfied of a fruitful morning.
Like you, I am moving into the realm of drawing the mental pictures in my head that speaks of my relationship with Him. And thanks to your article, I have repented of my cowardice. I was not bold for Him due to fear of rejection. THank you for allowing Him to minister to me. God bless!
