Message | I grew up in Killyleagh in the 1960s in a big old house in Dufferin Place, at the top of Frederick St. We moved to Downpatrick in 1969 when it was knocked down as part of the redevelopment of the street. I remember as a kid there used to be stories about a secret tunnel from the neighbouring derelict house to the castle, but we never found it. Nor did we ever find the secret tunnel from the castle to Dunnyneil Island. A couple of doors down from us there was a blue plaque commemorating the birthplace of Sir Hans Sloane. We were told he was the founder of the British Museum, but as children our attention was grabbed by local sporting heroes like Brian Steenson (killed in the Isle of Man TT races) and Terry Cochrane (on the Frederick St mural and, I think, now doing football media work in Middlesbrough). I've discovered there's a book - Six Famous Sons Of Killyleagh - which includes two of the above; I will have to track down a copy next time I'm there. |
