Message | Hi Brother. I'm friends with a few homeless people in my neighborhood and the areas in neighboring towns that I frequent. It is true as you said about the high incidence of veterans and what many people do not realize - is you can find people w/ college degrees too who have been on the street for decades. But, one thing that is also prevalent with homeless people is mental illness. I skimmed over the information and I think that is something to consider. There are some people that it will be very difficult to get information from. People that are waiting for rides for years that will never come. People who think that something from decades ago just happened recently. Many homeless poeple are fixated on one or two particular things that happened in their lives. I think one thing to consider is that in many cases, it will not be possible to complie a life story, but get a superficial feel for what the person has lived through no matter how much time is spent with the person. Plus, I don't think people should just walk up and ask to interview homeless people. You should build respect with them first as friends. Many are not going to like the idea that you are interviewing them when they live in such fear from what has happened in their lives and are suspicious of people/have trust issues.I signed up by the way. I'm also informing though about understanding some limitations that people will confront and to value them as friends and members of the community, more than subjects. |
